Brick tinting

Brick tinting is a process of applying a specialized mineral-based stain to brick surfaces to change or adjust their color. Unlike paint, brick tint penetrates into the brick and bonds chemically, allowing the brick to retain its natural texture and breathability.

How Brick Tinting Works

  • Uses breathable, masonry-safe pigments

  • Soaks into the brick rather than coating it

  • Maintains the original texture (doesn’t create a thick film)

  • Can be color-matched to blend old and new brick

When Is Brick Tinting Needed?

1. Color Mismatch After Repairs

If you’ve replaced damaged bricks, the new bricks often don’t match the older, weathered ones. Tinting helps blend them seamlessly.

2. After Construction or Renovation

Sometimes new construction results in brick colors that don’t match the design vision. Tinting corrects the tone without replacing the brick.

3. Fading or Weather Damage

Sun exposure, moisture, and age can cause uneven discoloration. Tinting restores uniform color.

4. Mortar or Stain Accidents

If mortar smears or cleaning chemicals discolor the brick, tinting can correct the affected areas.

5. Historic Restoration

In preservation projects, tinting helps maintain original appearance without replacing historic materials.

When NOT to Use Brick Tinting

  • If bricks are structurally failing or spalling

  • If there is severe moisture intrusion (must fix moisture first)

  • If you want a completely opaque, solid color (painting may be the better option)
